The thought of moving from her comfortable home in Boston to the frontier city of Cincinnati when she is 13 years old is a shock to Betsy Miller to say the least.
Quickly, we join Betsy and her family as they all take a very dangerous boat trip down the Ohio River that seems to go on forever. If that's not enough, Betsy's cousin George is also coming along with his dog. Betsy is always asking the question; why does she have to leave the only home she ever had and all her friends? She is not looking forward to living in Cincinnati and is wondering if the faith of her family will bring them all safely through the harrowing trip.
This book will be interesting to pre-teen girls. It is an exciting story of a young girl experiencing changes in her life and teaches a little American History while discussing family traumas, disappointments and heartbreaks that all of us have faced - no matter what the age. Young girls will find that Betsy Miller isn't all that different than they are which makes this a good book for personal reading or home schooling. This series is so interesting for young people to learn history while enjoying a good read.
