Odessa St. Clair is near death when she arrives in Colorado Springs with her brother, Dominic and sister, Moira who have accompanied her from their home in Philadelphia. Odessa’s breath has been stolen by consumption. The sanatorium in Colorado Springs is her last hope for a cure.

Odessa is drawn to fellow patient, Bryce McAllan. The two have a strong foundation for friendship sharing this dreaded disease and before long they find there’s more than friendship blooming. But soon they have even more in common as their friend and fellow patient, Sam O’Toole suddenly dies – supposedly of consumption. Odessa thinks Sam was murdered but how can she prove it?

When Sam leaves a map, of sorts, to his silver mine to Odessa and his property to Bryce, they find there are those so greedy they would kill for it. But both Odessa and Bryce have to trust God to overcome this disease and "breathe" again before they can tackle this mystery and move on to a future together.

In the meantime Dominic and Moira struggle with their own issues; what they want out of life vs. what’s expected of them. Both know they don’t want to do what’s expected of them but are they strong enough to move out into the world of the unknown.

Can they all turn their life over to God and allow Him to lead them no matter where it takes them? Will Odessa and Bryce have the chance to "breathe" and follow the life God has for them? Or is the mine more important to them than the chance to "breathe"?

Mystery, intrigue, deception, love, trust and reliance on God are just some of the aspects of the first novel in the Homeward Trilogy. Lisa Bergren has written it all and mixed it up nicely giving the reader a chance to see many sides to her characters. It’s hard not to hold your breath as you’re reading through a mystery scene or not consciously "breathe" in and out when Odessa or Bryce are having an attack.

With many different facets to these characters and this story, the reader is left with the impression that the mystery is not necessarily over. What will happen next in the Homeward Trilogy? I can’t wait to find out!
