Hi All:

This is a very good novel set at the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign in England.

The main character, Liberty Lane, has come to England to live following the death of her father.  She is trying to make a new life for herself in the city.  Although she's a very independent girl, she still struggles with the memories of the treacherous times she's just been through - times that came to an end with the death of her father.  She has not had an easy time of it adjusting to city life.

First, a very handsome politician, Benjamin Disraeli, who has a great future ahead of him, wants Liberty to use her friends in the theatrical world to spy on a prima ballerina with a notorious past.  He thinks that said ballerina, named Columbine, is trying to blackmail some of his society friends.  Unfortunately, Columbine is killed in her dressing room after an altercation with a younger and less successful dancer, who becomes the chief suspect in Columbine's death.

Liberty is at the center of this investigation because one of her friends, Daniel Suter, is convinced of the girl's innocence and will put himself in danger to prove that she was not involverd.  Liberty's determination to save them both leads her on a merry chase through the aristocracy of England to some of London's seedier neighborhoods.

I liked this book very much and read every word.  I recommend it to all mystery and history lovers who want to find the answer to the question: How far would you go to save a friend?

Talk to you soon,
Mary
