Detective Chief Inspector St. Just finds himself in the wrong place at the right time. He is invited to be part of a writer’s conference being held at Dalmorton Castle in Scotland. This is a small conference attended only by those writers invited by Lord Easterbrook; actually, there are predominately authors with a few agents and others included. The competition between the writers is across many levels - - from finding the right agent to getting the highest ratings on their books.
The mystery becomes their own, however, when the newest best-selling author, Kimberly Kalder, is found murdered. St. Just finds himself working to the local law enforcement officers to find that killer among the conference attendees. This should be a murder which is easy to solve since the drawbridge was up at the time and no one has been allowed to leave.
G.M. Malliet has an easy to read style of writing but the characters in Death of a Lit Chick were, to be honest, a few too many and just not enough depth for me to connect with them. I had to work to remember which character was which and how they were connected as well as what they had done and not done. Even the hero, Detective St. Just, came across rather wooden.
That being said, though, the underlying mystery was well thought out and the layers were a good pyramid. The ending climax was also a good evolution. I would like to visit the Castle one of these days.
