Dorritt Mott’s family is on their way to Texas to obtain free land offered by the Spanish/Mexican government. Having to leave New Orleans because of her stepfather’s gambling debts was the last thing that Dorritt wanted to do. She had been trying to devise a plan to get away from her domineering stepfather and strike out on her own but the family had to liquidate assets before she could find a way. The desire of Dorrit’s heart has always been to be an independent woman not trapped into marriage like her mother.

It’s on their way to Texas that Dorritt meets Quinn, a half-breed scout that is both mysterious and intriguing. Since Dorritt is really the one in charge of their small wagon train, she becomes more and more dependent on Quinn both for his survival skills and his knowledge of Texas. But that’s not all, there’s something else that keeps drawing these two together. Dorritt’s desire is to become an independent woman, but does the Lord have something else in mind for her?

Now Quinn isn’t the settling-down kind of man. He’s been a wanderer and probably always will be. No one has much use for a half-breed, except when they need something from him. He has to quit thinking of himself with Dorritt, it just won’t work. She’s too good for him.

God has something else in mind for these two. When you have two strong-willed people who have been kicked around by life for as long as Dorritt and Quinn have, let’s just say that the Lord has His work cut out for Him. Though Dorritt wants to do the Lord’s will, will she realize that the "desire of her heart" is changing? Will Quinn be strong enough to step out and stand up for what he truly wants? Will he be able to see that God considers him His child, just like anyone else? Will their love be strong enough to bring them together?

Once again, Lyn Cote’s has written a thought-provoking romance. Dorritt and Quinn are two opposite, strong-willed people brought together by God’s grace. Their banter and pull toward each other will keep you turning the pages wondering how God will finally draw them together.

I’ve enjoyed Lyn Cote’s stories, and this one is no exception. Her colorful writing style, unique story lines and the subtle inspiration are just the right mix to keep the reader wanting more. I anxiously await book two in the Texas Star of Destiny series. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.
