Frederica Merriville, the eldest of five children, brings her sister to London in hopes of finding her a husband. Unfortunately, Frederica has no one with the connections to make a splash in society, therefore she decides to present herself to the Marquess of Alverstoke,a distant relation, in hopes that he will aid her. Lord Alverstoke, at first, plans to ignore yet another person seeking his help but becomes intrigued and decides to help Frederica, with the added benefit of annoying his sister, who has been trying to meddle in his life.
Frederica is a very enjoyable Regency romance, which contains great period accuracy and many humorous scenes. Georgette Heyer is considered the Queen of the Regency romance, and Frederica is one of my favorite stories by her. Lord Alverstoke is bored and rather spoiled by his position in life, until Frederica and her family roar into his life and stir things up. Before Alverstoke realizes what is happening, the family worms its way into his life and heart, making him a better man. Frederica is a managing female, because it was left to her to raise her siblings. Intelligent, with a lively sense of humor, Frederica is a perfect match for Alverstoke and their courtship is very entertaining-- at times very funny, at times adventurous, and at times painful. The scene with the Baluchistan Hound is priceless, and I defy anyone not to laugh. Frederica is a powerful Regency romance, that every fan of the genre should read.
