Hugh de Montagne has a problem. He has awoken with no memory; well, to be accurate, he knows his first name. The boy of the family who befriended him after his accident shares that Hugh had said he was on his way to Connacht. That is the extent of what he knows but decides the only way to find out more is follow that path. Given that he has no money, he takes him some time to arrive and finds himself with not even a horse upon arrival.

Sorcha may be a princess but she fell prey to a scam that cost her the home she grew up in. She has been exiled to a small cottage on the outskirts of her father’s land. She was tricked into a false marriage and was left to raise her child alone. Her father watches from afar, however.

After proving himself to the king, Hugh is assigned to help watch out for Sorcha which proves to be no easy task. Not only is she a woman with a mind of her own but when his memory returns, there is more trouble to deal with.

Joanne Rock has created a wonderful tale of romance and intrigue. I began by thinking this would be a typical historical novel but that is simply not the case. First, the historical part is really well written and the reader becomes a part of the story and forgets "time period." It is always evident that it is set in the past but it isn’t one that comes across as a history lesson or one that trips the reader up with unknown terms.

The characters have really great depth with incredible emotion shown. The hero is truly a man we would all like to "protect" us and the heroine is one feisty princess. The Knight’s Return is written by an author who knows her craft and her era. Well done.

(I am really hoping that Onora’s story (Sorcha’s sister) comes out soon. Lori
