Eleanor Coggins is determined to find out how her friend, Janet, was killed. She knows who did—Janet’s husband, Banner Westfield—but she is trying to figure out how he did it and why. She drives to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and recreates herself in order to do some investigation. In very short order, "Ellie" got a partner from a place she least expected it, from within the Westfield family.
Jack Payton is Banner’s older half-brother and the black sheep of the family. He has recently been paroled after two years in prison for manslaughter committed while under the influence. He is doing his own investigation of Banner but from a totally different view. In order for them to investigate together without any suspicion, a fake engagement seems to be the way to go.
Somehow along the way, not only did they begin to learn more about the accident that had put Jack in prison but they learned more about how Banner ran his business. What they also learned though is that they enjoyed each other’s company and worked really well together.
I could use a lot of superlatives such as riveting, fast-paced, intriguing and more but probably the best word I can use is realistic. Starr has used some real issues for her hero and heroine. The hero is dealing with re-entry into society after being released from prison and the heroine is trying to figure out who she is. Her name is Eleanor and her friends knew her as Nora. Nora is predictable but Ellie is determined and outgoing. When it comes down to it, Eleanor has to figure out which best suits her.
Starr Ambrose has created a really well done debut manuscript and if her future ones are similar to this, she is going to do really well.
