Lord Ian Mackenzie is not an average man. Ian was put into an asylum for ten years because of his behavior. Because Ian has what is today known as Asperger syndrome, people of his time consider him mad. It is only after his father dies and Ian's brother inherits the dukedom, that Ian is saved from the asylum by his brother. Even so, society still considers him rather mad. When Ian meets the widow, Beth Ackerley, he knows that he must stop her wedding to a man, who is only marrying her for her money and doesn't deserve her. In fact, Ian wants Beth for himself, but ,unfortunately, Ian is implicated in the death of a former prostitute. Beth finds herself embroiled with Ian and his family, and she must uncover their secrets, in order, to have a relationship with Ian.
Wow! All I can say is The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie is one of the best books, that I have ever read. I defy anyone not to fall a little in love with Ian, as he struggles to survive in a world which doesn't understand him. Ian is vulnerable, yet strong and an altogether wonderful hero, and Beth is his soul mate in every way. Beth, who was raised in the London slums but later inherited a fortune from the lady who employed her as a companion, is not the usual society woman. Because of her background, Beth has experienced the seamier side of life and has developed a backbone made of steel. Beth is one determined lady, and will do what is necessary for the man that she loves. Beth grows to love and understand Ian, and ,slowly, Ian blossoms by loving and being loved in return. The family dynamics between the Mackenzies are intriguing, and Ian's brothers are to get books of their own. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.
The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie gets the highest recommendation, that I can give. It is a truly wonderful book.
