Dear Readers:
I am a fan of Lisa Jackson. And this book is like the rest in the fact that she does her homework. Each paragraph, each police procedure, each "scary" moment is researched to death and written with a talented mind. The only thing that I found a bit draggy was the immense amount of research. The book is about one hundred pages too long and I ended up halfway through just reading the dialogue.
Rick Bentz, a New Orleans police detective wakes up in the hospital and realizes he’s been in an accident. His wife, Jennifer, appears and blows him a kiss. Unfortunately, his wife has been dead for twelve years. Once out of the hospital Rick sees his dead wife everywhere. He’s sent pictures of her in the mail from an anonymous source showing newspapers behind her that have the present day’s date. Is Jennifer alive? Rick has to know and settle his past once and for all.
He flies to Los Angeles to seek out the truth. While there, a serial killer strikes that hasn’t been heard of in years. Then more corpses from Jennifer’s past begin to appear and Rick is at a loss. Could his ex-wife have faked her own death all those years ago? And, if she did, why resurface now? The most interesting character to me was Rick’s new wife. She is a lovely psychic who has married this messed-up guy and is expecting a baby. Will she be able to steal her husband back from a dead woman? Or will the obsession that he still has for Jennifer rip them apart.
Yes, this is pure suspense. The story is good - not great - because the storyline of a dead wife/husband has been done in the past. But if you are a Lisa Jackson fan - or a suspense fan, period - the book will be satisfying. She is a New York Times Bestselling Author and deserves to be. Malice will be up there as well as all her others. But, as I said, the slow unwinding of this very long story takes its toll at times.
Until Next Time, Amy
