Pemberley Manor continues the story of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Lizzy Bennett, which began in Pride and Prejudice. After their marriage, Lizzy and Darcy hope to settle down to domestic bliss. Unfortunately, Darcy has emotional demons and secrets from the past standing in the way of the couple's happiness.
Pemberley Manor is an interesting sequel to Pride and Prejudice, which does have amusing moments but, overall, has a much darker tone than Ms. Austen's work. While Mr. Darcy's character development is not what this reader anticipated, it is interesting and makes for a compelling read. Unfortunately, I have trouble picturing Pride and Prejudice’s Darcy reacting in the way the Darcy of Pemberley Manor reacted. On the other hand, Lizzy is much the same as this reader pictured her-- the true heroine of the story. Many of the characters from Pride and Prejudice appear in this sequel, along with some new faces that enliven and enrich the story. However, there is one character that I can't imagine Austen writing, for it would have been considered quite scandalous at the time.
When taken as a stand alone work Pemberley Manor is an enjoyable read. However, when compared to Pride and Prejudice, it falls short of expectations.
