Ten-year old Rachel Yoder anticipates nothing but fun now that school’s out. Being Amish doesn’t stifle the high expectations she has for her summer vacation, like hopefully riding in a shiny blue convertible or getting a skateboard for her birthday. What she tries to avoid is all the trouble she seems to get into, but it’s practically impossible.
Getting locked in a root cellar certainly wasn’t her fault. She didn’t mean for the frog to get loose and hop through the church service. The only place to ride her skateboard happened to be the wrong place. And who wouldn’t open a jar of fireflies to see why they weren’t lighting, even if it wasn’t outside?
Rachel is quite precocious. She has good intentions, but when she doesn’t think things through something always seems to go awry.
Wanda Brunstetter brings children of various backgrounds together through Rachel and her adventures. Rachel may be Amish, but she’s really no different than any other child; she has dreams and fears and responsibilities just as they do. She wonders if God listens to her when she prays, she worries her mother won’t love her anymore for all the trouble she causes. Rachel’s lessons are hard learned, but equally rewarding.
Rachel and School’s Out! is delightful.
