Sophie Mae Reynolds has a new passion. Spinning. She loves it and can’t get enough of it. She’s so proud of her first skein of homespun yarn. Unfortunately it was used to murder resident artist Ariel Skylark and unfortunately Sophie Mae was the one to discover her body at the art co-op.

Too bad boyfriend and detective Barr Ambrose has to take a back seat on this case. Conflict of interest. Even so, Sophie Mae is determined to leave the investigating to the lead detective on the case. Trouble and pain has followed in her previous investigations. Trouble and pain she could do without, thank you very much. She has enough trouble breathing down her neck as it is since Barr’s ex-wife has shown up, wanting to rekindle her relationship with him.

Sad to say though, detective Lane’s rapport with anyone (persons of interest or witnesses) is nil, nada, zip. She lacks the finesse needed to ferret out any information. It’s mighty convenient that Sophie Mae needs to talk with people connected to the co-op as well as Ariel’s family. What’s a little question or two or three? She’s definitely not forming her own investigation, she’s simply helping gather information.

Regrettably some of Sophie Mae’s questions and theories lead to that trouble and pain she was trying to avoid. Obviously she’s getting closer to the truth, otherwise someone wouldn’t be out to hurt her. Permanently.

As I’ve come to expect from this author, the secondary cast of characters played their parts impeccably. They let the spotlight shine on Sophie Mae which enhanced the story. The entire cast gave an edge-of-the-seat performance.

On top of that, there were some angles to this puzzle I never saw coming. Clues and red herrings that led me to many wrong conclusions. I was all set to urge Sophie Mae to point the finger at the wrong person…

Cricket McRae spins quite the yarn. Spin a Wicked Web is deliciously suspenseful and witty. I can't wait for more!
